I remember an incident that I had back on city patrol duty. I had a nice shiny Impala just in from outfitting in the shop. I was surprised at the responsiveness of that little V-6. I was sitting off an intersection near the highway offramp when a bright yellow Chevy Cavalier flew by. I caught up with it in no time. I called in the plates.
'Central, Charlie 11', I radioed.
'Charlie 11', resounded the response.
'Charlie 11 in pursuit of yellow late model Chevrolet Cavalier plate Adam Charlie Ocean nine-seven-six. Suspect disregard traffic signal at a high rate of speed.'
'Yellow Cavalier ACO976 confirmed. back-up is en route.'
'10-4 Central, engaging pursuit.'
I gunned the throttle and turned on my lights. The Cavalier sped up, throwing caution to the wind.
'Central, Cavalier is refusing to stop, please advise.'
'Copy, Charlie 11. Engage pursuit. Adam 12, pursuit is go, please respond.'
Adam 12 radioed 'Copy pursuit, ETA 3 minutes.'
It was just me and the suspect for at least 3 minutes. I hit the siren to avoid any problems and turned on the wig wags for intersection control. I couldn't believe what happened next: The suspect activated red and blues in its grille and rear window.
'Central Charlie 11, suspect has red and blues, please advise.'
Immediately, I heard 'Charlie 11, suspect is in illegal possession. Repeat, Suspect is not police.'
My heart skipped a beat. '10-4 Central. Adam 12, What's your 20?'
'Charlie Adam 12, I'm on your tail.'
That's just what I needed to hear. This pursuit was getting out of hand and fast. 'Central request authorize for a PIT maneuver.'
'Charlie 11, PIT confirmed. Keep it tight. 23:17.'
'10-4 Central.' I pulled my wheel up to the back end of the Cavalier, and lined up just right. One quick left steer and the suspect spun hard into the curb. I pulled right up to the front bumper, and Adam 12, blocked the suspect from backing away. I jumped out of the car and Adam followed suit, both of us with guns drawn. The suspect got out of his vehicle and surrendered willingly. He was charged with Speeding, Disregard Traffic Device, Fleeing and Evading, Reckless Endangerment, and Impersonating a Police Officer. The kid was 17. We read him the Mirandas, and threw him in my car. On the way to Central, he consented and spilled it all. He had been out for a joyride, and apparently was afraid to stop because of the lights he had in his vehicle, but the kid thought he could cut traffic better with red and blues. I know where he was coming from though. I remember back when I was a kid I thought the lights looked so good on undercover units, I wanted some for myself, but they weren't available. But now you can even pick them up in an Auto Parts store. I'm surprised half the world hasn't tried it yet. The boy was stuck on community service and his car has a nice new home, strobe light free, on the outskirts of town, thanks to an auction.
